How to make an impact in interviews in 2024

You've got the skills, experience, and passion for the job. Now you just need to make your interview memorable.

With over 18 years in recruitment and more than 1,300 candidates successfully placed, we've seen our fair share of interviews. Some candidates have excelled, while others have struggled.

We're passionate about helping you sit in the former category, so we've compiled six key tips to help you impress in your interview:

1. Preparation is Essential

Dedicate time to reflect on your skills and how they align with the role.

Consider how you can benefit the company and prepare specific examples that demonstrate your suitability.

This preparation will boost your confidence and showcase your value.

2. Presentation Matters

Choose your outfit the night before to reduce morning stress.

Allow ample time to get ready and extra time for travel, to account for any delays! A calm and focused demeanour will contribute to a professional presentation.

Stats show that 71% of employers wouldn’t hire someone who doesn’t align with their dress code!

3. Be Authentic

First impressions form within seconds.

Presenting a false persona is not only unsustainable but it is also draining! Although you're trying to put your best foot forward, ensure you are genuine, straightforward, and honest. The right employer will appreciate the real you.

Studies show that 40% of interviewers who don't move past the first stage, cite confidence as a major factor.

4. Ask Thoughtful Questions

It’s reported that around 47% of unsuccessful interviews stem from a lack of understanding of the role or company.

If you're working with a recruitment agent, utilise their insights. Enquire about specific role responsibilities, team culture, management style, and staff retention. Research the company thoroughly via their website and social media to understand their values and culture.

This demonstrates initiative and genuine interest.

5. Take Notes. Seriously.

An interview is a two-way exchange to determine mutual fit.

This surprises people when we suggest it, but taking a notepad (and taking notes) is a great way to show you are committed.

This demonstrates you are interested, engaged, and prepared.

6. Display Good Manners

Politeness can open doors that qualifications alone cannot.

We've seen highly qualified candidates miss opportunities due to poor interpersonal skills. Conclude your interview by asking about next steps and expressing sincere gratitude for their time.

At McKinnel Associates, we're committed to your success. Our focus is on building fulfilling career prospects for you, and we're genuinely excited to support you on this journey.
